PARTE 2: CENTRO NIEMEYER
The Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Center, Centro Niemeyer, is a cultural center complex designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907-2012), one of the Modern Movement's most famous architects, perhaps best known for his work in desigining Brasilia, the new capitol of Brazil. See my blog posting for October 2014 at the link below for Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, and San Paolo. Examples of Niemeyer's work actually appears in all three cities.

The Niemeyer Center is formed by five main elements that complement each other:
- The open "square" is a large open outdoor space for cultural activities that reflects Niemeyer's idea of a place open to humankind. The sqaure is bisected by a covered walkway.
- The auditorium (at the left) contains approximately 1000 seats for concerts, theatre, and conferences. It is unusual in that its seating does not distinguish between social classes. It includes the Club, a small space for concerts, and an exhibition room in the foyer.
- The dome (upper right) is the exhibition building.
- The tower (between the auditorium and the dome at the top) is for sight-seeing and includes a restaurant and cocktail lounge.
- The multi-purpose building (flat-roofed, curved building at lower right) contains the film center, meeting-rooms, cafe, shop, and information kiosk.

The split pavement dates to the 17th century. The smooth surface is for people,
the cobbled surface for horses and livestock.
